There are many historic regions through the Alpes Maritimes and Var regions of Provence and whilst some of them are 'tourist hot spots' such as St Paul de Vence and Fayence, there are other 'hidden gems' tucked in the hills and mountains that deserve a mention. Here are just a couple we visited recently. Heading east along the A8 from Nice towards Italy, and taking the Moyenne Corniche on the way to Monaco sits the village of La Turbie . Unlike it's glizy neighbour La Turbie is a 'working' French village with some shops, restaurants and hotels. It has a very limited amount of public parking especially during the busy summer months, but out of season it is easier to park and well worth stopping for a while. On a clear day there are wonderful views down to the coast towards Monaco. La Turbie also has a 'hidden gem' - the medieval village which has been beautifully restored and where famously Napoleon once stayed for a night. The streets of the old village were quiet and peaceful on the day we visited and it was delightful wandering around these ancient streets admiring the pristine houses with their wonderful floral displays. Rich in history dating back to pre-Roman times, La Turbie was once part of Monaco but in 1860 was redesignated to France.
